Withthe onset of WallStreet’sInternet mania in the late 199Os,venture capitalists exploded into public view. Thanks first to the proliferation of personal computers and thenof the Internet, thetechnology funded by venture capitalists moved from a niche industry confined to Silicon Valley and Route 128 to an essential thread of the social fabric of American society. From these roots, which were as much the product of accident as design, venture capitalists toiled in obscurityfor 50 years. The idea of marrying small amounts of capital withexpert business advice in order to accelerate the development of new business ideas was not entirely new in the late 1940s,but itis from that period that today’s venture capital industry traces its roots. Finally, I must thank two people who provided absolutely critical support: editorial researcher Andrew Freiburghouse and contenteditor Eric Nee, who let me know, as always, what worked and what didn’t.į the many economic innovations that emerged in this country in the years following the Second World War, few have had greater impact-or been less well known-than venture capital. And The Kingmakerswould not have been possible without the backing ofJohn Wiley & Sons and my editor there, Matthew Holt. In particular, I’m grateful to Roger McNamee of Integral Capital Partners, who wrote the foreword and provided invaluable advice and insight into how the venture capital industry really works.I’d also like to single out entrepreneurs Hugh Martin of ON1 Systems, David Roberts of Zaplet, and Glenn Kelman of Plumtree Software, who gave me unusual access to the innerworkings of their companies’ progress along the start-up trail. Would like to acknowledgethe cooperation of the dozens of venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, investment bankers, and others who gave me some oftheir most precious resource-time-so that I could complete thisbook.
